The 1st Summer School event “Acid Mine Drainage and REE Contamination Mitigation” took place between May 23rd to 27th 2022 in Lisbon.

The Summer School event is the result of the PANORAMA Project entitled “European training Network on Rare Earth elements environmental transfer: from rock to human”, funded by the Horizon 2020 framework program (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2019). The general scope of the project aims to understand the environmental processes of speciation, transfer and ecotoxicity of rare earth elements in the environment, in order to predict potential risks of their dissemination in the environment. For this purpose, the event brought together a consortium of 14 universities, 4 private partners and 15 PhD fellows who carry out their research work in this area.

The Summer School was organized by Instituto Superior Técnico, with the collaboration of partner entities Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro, S.A. (EDM) and Electrão. On the 24th and 25th of May, field-trips were made to the former mining areas of São Domingos (Mértola) and Lousal (Grândola). Other places of interest were also visited, related to the environmental recovery interventions carried out by EDM. These works combine monitoring and characterization activities in the affected areas, developed by scholarship students.
