Environmental Remediation of the Formiga Mining Area

Concluded

The former mining area of Formiga is located in the civil parish of Arcozelo da Serra, a village located 800 m to the SSW of the mining area, in the municipality of Gouveia and district of Guarda.

The mine was operated by Société Urane-Radium (SUR) between 1915 and 1920 for the extraction of radium. Underground mining methods were used and excavations were made between two shafts, and spoil heaps of inert materials and poor ores resulting from the mining can still be found in the area. There were no leaching operations.

The services to be carried out in this mining area consist of the following main activities:

  • Soil drainage;
  • Demolition and replacement of walls;
  • Removal of existing spoil heaps;
  • Recovery and landscaping.

The investment is co-financed by the Cohesion Fund and will allow the environmental liabilities resulting from mining at this location to be resolved, bringing benefits to local populations through the improvement of current conditions and use of the areas reclaimed for other ends.
