The 13th Partners Annual Meeting of the Route of Mines and Points of Mining and Geological Interest in Portugal took place on the 7th and 8th of July 2022 at the Urgeiriça Mine, with a participation close to a hundred people.

The organization was carried out by EDM – Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro, S.A., with the support of the Directorate General for Energy and Geology (DGEG), but also of the many present entities, such as Nelas Municipality, Hunosa, CCDR Centro, Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), Environmental Fund (Fundo Ambiental), Antena 1, University of Coimbra, ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, and, of course, the essential collaboration and contribution of the 42 partners of the Route Guide.

During the meeting, some themes and issues, such as the evolution of The Urgeiriça Mining Complex or the “Sustainability of Mining Territories, from Environment to Economy”, were discussed and addressed in the various panels, along with local communities.

EDM – Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro S.A, has participated in the 90th edition of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) in Toronto, Canada. The event occurred between 13th to 15th June.

PDAC is the world’s largest mineral prospecting and mining convention, which brings together governments, companies, service providers and organizations linked to this sector of activity.

Within this participation EDM was able to promote the company, its activities and Portugal. Not only it was showed to the attending public the prospecting and research developments made by EDM, but also gave the opportunity to introduce the audience into the environmental remediation business.

As a result, several contacts were established with various entities, in order to promote synergies in the areas of action of the companies and exchange of experiences.

The PDAC 2022 edition was attended by 17,445 people, including investors, executives, geologists, government officials and students.

The PARTNERS WEEK 2022 will take place between April 4th and 10th.

Several activities are scheduled to happen involving the Partners from different Portuguese regions. Most of them will surely provide various and new experiences to all of those interested.

An EDM-responsible activity is also included in the 2022 official program, taking place in the April 10th at the Urgeiriça Mine facility (as explained in the available program HERE – pages 76 and 77).

The conference “Valorização do Interior e Especificidades dos Territórios de Interesse Geológico e Mineiro” will take place next 27th June at 11 a.m..

Europe in my region” is an initiative of the European Commission that makes it possible to disseminate and increase the visibility of EU-funded projects. It also encourages citizens to discover European projects in the region where they live.

By sharing their images and experiences through social networks, using the hashtag #EUinmyRegion, people allow others to discover new ideas and think about how EU support can help develop such areas.

EDM – Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro, S.A., joined this initiative by promoting a visit to the project “Aljustrel Mining Recovery Area (3rd and 4th Phases)”, where a special emphasis was given to the rehabilitation of the old Mine Gallery.

This gallery is located under the access road to the Bairro of Vale d´Oca in Aljustrel, another project that was supported by EU Funds, more specifically by the QREN 2007-2013 / POVT – Thematic Operational Program Territorial Enhancement / Recovery of Environmental Liabilities.

EDM will be present at Green Business Week 2018, which will take place from 11 to 13 April at the Lisbon Congress Centre.

This year’s event will focus on the concept of “Smart Cities” in terms of efficiency, mobility, digital platforms, sustainability, the creation of opportunities for research, education and business creation. It will be an opportunity to reflect on the future of the organization of our cities.

Forming part of the exhibition area for entities overseen by the Office of the Secretary of State for Energy, of the Ministry for Economic Affairs, the focus of EDM – Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro, SA is on the reclamation of geological resources and the environmental remediation of areas degraded by abandoned former mining operations and on the recovery of geological resources with great potential, in particular LITHIUM, whose increasing demand driven by its use in batteries justifies the government’s priority, implemented through the launching of specific proposals for the main areas available in the country.

The conference Digital Transformation in Energy | Low-voltage concessions: opportunities and challenges will take place on 12 April, from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. In addition to registering through the invitation, you should send an email confirmation to Nelson Lage.

Schedule now available here.

EDM is attending the PDAC 2018 Convention and can be found at the INVESTORS EXCHANGE stand 2,136 in halls F and G of the South Building.

By participating in the PDAC 2018 Convention, EDM aims to achieve 2 complementary objectives:

1. On the one hand, to publicize EDM’s activities both in the field of environmental rehabilitation of degraded former mining areas, in which it does pioneering work at an international level, and in the field of prospection and surveying of mineral resources, in which it has a number of ongoing projects. The intention is to identify partners or investors for possible consortia (in the case of Prospection and Surveying) or to identify opportunities to provide services (in the case of environmental rehabilitation);

2. The other area of focus is the promotion of investment in the highly promising mining sector in Portugal, specifically with regard to LITHIUM, demand for which has grown exponentially due to the issue of batteries for electric cars and where Portugal is currently preparing 12 international tenders to allocate areas for Prospection and Surveying with a view to exploiting the huge existing potential.

The EDM made a technical presentation on the topic “Environmental Rehabilitation of São Domingos Old Mining Area in the Iberian Pyrite Belt: a phased approach” at the session “Mining Techniques and Circular Economy”, held at Metallic Mining Hall (MMH) on 19 October 2017, in the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses of Seville (FIBES).

In this session, Eng. Edgar Carvalho from the EDM presented the strategy of Environmental Recovery of the Former Mining Area of São Domingos, which integrates six phases of intervention, of which Phases 1 and 2 are underway, in a total investment of about 7 million euros to be made between 2015 and 2019.

The European Mineral Resources Day 2017 will be officially opened on 21 and 22 September by the European Commission in Nordkalk, Kurevere and Kunda Nordic Tsement in Estonia.
